El episodio de la Guerra Civil española del que se habla en Cartas desde el exilo, donde se relata la expropiación de los bienes de un republicano que tiene que tomar el camino de la diáspora, da lugar al autor para hacer un recorrido por un amplio espacio sentimental, que incluye a las personas de su generación, pero también a la de los padres y a la de los hijos, estos últimos a través de la reflexión sobre ese futuro incierto al que se enfrentan. Todo ello bajo la lupa de aquel hecho histórico que marcó a tres generaciones. Aunque la guerra no fue vivida directamente por ellos, han tenido el relato de primera mano de sus padres y, en muchos casos, han sufrido de una forma más o menos intensa sus consecuencias. La curiosidad, la búsqueda de la verdad de aquellos hechos, se muestra con claridad en el último tramo de la vida, cuando el protagonista llega a conocer los datos definitivos que le revelan las cartas. Es también una reflexión que trata de enlazar pasado y presente, proyectando las conclusiones que se obtienen de cara al futuro, como queriendo hacer patente el conocido aforismo que dice: “el que desconoce su historia se verá obligado a repetirla”. Los tres tiempos que se pretenden identificar forman cada uno de los tres capítulos, enlazando los dramáticos de la novela: exposición, nudo y desenlace; con las tres generaciones que comparecen en el relato.
